What you need to know about getting your MO State Real Estate Sales Person’s License

To obtain a Real Estate Sales Person’s license in the state of Missouri, you must be at least 18 years of age and meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • earn a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of a 48-hour pre-exam salesperson course from an accredited organization. The certificate is good for 6 months; that is, you must submit your application for license to Missouri Real Estate Commission (MREC) within six months of completing this training
  • complete the 24-hour Missouri Real Estate Practice Course (MREP) prior to submitting application for license
  • pass a Criminal History Background Check

Note: you may qualify for some exemptions if you are a licensed attorney and pass BOTH portions of the Missouri salesperson examination, OR if you hold a current and active real estate license in another state and pass the STATE portion of the MO salesperson exam.

How the exams are administered

Both the National and State portions of the exams are administered by computer. You must make an appointment with PSI for Missouri. The time allotted for both National and State Salesperson exams, taken at the same time, is 4 hours. However, if taken on separate days, it is 2½ hours for National Salesperson only and 2 hours for State Salesperson only.

Applying for the Exam

PSI Services (PSI) is the organization that administers the exams in the state of Missouri. You can schedule your appointment, with them, by phone or online.

NOTE: they will require a school name or code – this is the organization where you completed your 48-hour pre-exam salesperson course. Be sure to get the school code from the organization when you take your classes.

Tips for processing your License Application timely:

  1. Complete your fingerprinting while you are still attending your 48-hour pre-exam salesperson course. This is done through IDEMIA (Identogo). The process takes a while to complete so be proactive.

Your first step is to register with the Missouri Automated Criminal History Site (MACHS) at www.machs.mo.gov. MREC’s four-digit registration number is 0004. This is required to authorize the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the FBI to send the results to the Missouri Real Estate Commission.

2. Register for and complete both National and State exams immediately upon completion of the 48-hour pre-exam salesperson course. The material will still be fresh in your memory and you will do well in your exams.

3. Be sure to register for and complete the 24-hour Missouri Real Estate Practice Course (MREP) prior to submitting application for license. The certificate of completion is part of the packet you submit.
