Applying for and taking the exams

Pearson VUE is the organization that administers the exams. Both the National and State portions of the exams are administered by computer. You must schedule an appointment with Pearson VUE at least 24 hours before testing. There is no guarantee there will be a slot available at your desired time and location, so it is best you do not wait till the last minute to schedule your test.

The time allotted for both National and State Salesperson exams is 4 hours (2½ hours for National and 1½ hours for State).

NOTE: a school name or code is required – this is the organization where you completed your pre-exam courses. Be sure to get the school code from the organization when you take your classes.

Preparing for your exams

The exams consist of two parts – National and state. Both the national and state portions must be passed to be eligible for a license.

Below are the topics you need to be familiar with before registering for and taking the exams:

National Salesperson Portion

  1. Property Ownership
  2. Land Use Controls and Regulations
  3. Valuation and Market Analysis
  4. Financing
  5. General Principles of Agency
  6. Property Disclosures
  7. Contracts
  8. Leasing and Property Management
  9. Transfer of Title
  10. Practice of Real Estate
  11. Real Estate Calculations

Be sure to familiarize yourself with all the subject areas of Principles of Real Estate before taking the Kansas State portion.

Tips for processing your License Application timely:

  1. Complete your fingerprinting while you are still attending your pre-exam salesperson courses. Though not mandatory, you may submit your fingerprints, with fees, to KREC before the rest of your application packet. Keep in mind that the background/ criminal history is only good for 6 months.
  2. Register for and complete both National and State exams immediately upon completion of the pre-exam salesperson courses. The material will still be fresh in your memory, and you will do well in your exams.
  3. Register for and complete the 30-hour Kansas Practice Course prior to submitting application for license. The certificate of completion is part of the packet you submit.

Use the Salesperson Pre-Licensing Checklist to help with applying for your license.
